Install Pidgin 2.0.0 on Ubuntu Feisty (with all plugins)

You can easily get the vanilla Pidgin 2.0 .deb (installation file for Ubuntu Feisty).

The only thing i was missing badly were the plugins! I was really used to the libnotify and autoreply plugins. Anyway, so i’ve compiled a .deb here for the Purple Plugin Pack.

Plugins in the Plugin Pack

  1. Album
  2. Auto Accept
  3. Auto-rejoin
  4. Auto Reply
  5. awaynotify
  6. Bash.org
  7. Buddy Icon Tools
  8. Buddy List Options
  9. Buddy Note
  10. buddytime

  21. Irssi Features
  22. Last Seen
  23. List Handler
  24. Marker Line
  25. My Status Box
  26. napster

  29. Offline Message
  30. Old Logger
  31. Plonkers
  32. Schedule
  33. Separate and Tab
  34. Show Offline
  35. Sim Fix
  36. Slash Exec
  37. SSL Info
  38. Stocker
  39. Switch Spell
  40. Talk Filters
  41. XMMS Remote
  42. XChat-Chats

Edit: Thanks to Karthik, we have 64 bit debs for the plugin pack too!

Edit2: Some people are shamelessly copying this article and posting it on their blogs/sites. They were even hot linking to my .deb files. So now i am using box.net to distribute the deb files. Please do let me know if anyone faces issues with that :)

Edit3: Rapidshare link for 32 bit and 64 bit plugin pack added.

Edit4: Pidgin updated to v2.0.2.

Edit5: Plugin Pack updated to v2.0.0 for i386 architecture.

    That is pretty cool. Cheers!

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 karthiksn

This is the worst part i suppose when you install AMD64 Ubuntu

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 kalpik

Naah, actually if you want, i can guide you on how to compile the plugins yourself! I released it for 32 bit cuz i run 32 bit!

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 mehul

    noobs…..learn to compile it’s fun :P

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 kalpik

Actually Karthiksn DID compile it.. That’s how i got the 64 bit compiled deb :)

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 macsim
  13. Gravatar Icon 13 kalpik

Thanks max. You can also have the AMD64 debs from my site if you need them. :)

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 macsim

    It’s normal mate.

Why don’t you add the :
    guifications - http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/wiki/Guifications
    on the pack ?

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 kalpik

I have provided deb files for the libnotify plugin, and libnotify is MUCH better than guitifications in my opinion :)

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 macsim

Oki, hum I’ll try this one :)

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 mehul

    Missing the gaim-encryption plugin!

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 karthiksn

Yeah dude mehul we are noobs guided by better people so not exactly that bad.

And a public thanks to Kalpik for helping with Pidgin

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 Ya! Manic Kill!

I tried installing it but it didn’t work. What did I do wrong? How could I do something wrong with a deb file???

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 kalpik

What error did you get? How is it not working?

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 Richard

    I don’t see any link…where do I get the .deb for amd64?

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 kalpik

Richard, dont you see a “Box.net” widget here? Its based on flash. If you have some problems seeing it, let me know, ill upload it elsewhere for you :)

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 arclight

Sadly, box.net is not helping - there’s still no Flash plugin for AMD64/linux and I don’t need Flash so badly that I’m willing to jump through hoops to run a 32-bit browser. :/

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 FkJ

Richard, the widget requires flash 9

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 kalpik

I have added rapidshare links for people having trouble with flash :)

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 Mister Fish

I tried to install this but it gave me a dependancy error. I’m using the latest version of Pidgin. Does this deb work with it?

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 kalpik

Yes! I does work with Pidgin v2.0.2. What dependency is it trying to install?

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 BenZohl

Whzy not use http://www.getdeb.net/ to ditribute your .deb’s?

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 mind

You’re missing the gaim-encryption plugin, which I might add, is _extremely_ easy to use. There is no reason (besides excuses) for you not to install it (get your close friends to, as well).

Also, the gaim developers should have just renamed it to ‘game’, or moved development offshore. The new names, colors, and icons are horrible, even more so when you realize the change was only because of bullying.

    Hi,

Did you compile and package Group Message plugin successfully? I cannot see it in my plugin list.

I know this plugin is annoying, but I only use it to share something interesting with my friends.

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 Jesse Jarzynka

    Another vote for gaim-encryption.

  33. Gravatar Icon 33 kalpik

Thanks for visiting my blog guys.. Im just too busy these days.. Ill try and compile pidgin-encryption for you when i get time.

Jason Kottke (kottke.org) would like is favicon back.

Here is what happened when I tried to install the 64 bit deb on my Feisty box

    $ sudo dpkg -i pidgin_2.0.1-1~getdeb1_amd64.deb
    Password:
(Reading database … 184056 files and directories currently installed.)
    Unpacking pidgin (from pidgin_2.0.1-1~getdeb1_amd64.deb) …
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
    dpkg: error processing pidgin_2.0.1-1~getdeb1_amd64.deb (–install):
short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/share/locale/hu/LC_MESSAGES/pidgin.mo’)
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    pidgin_2.0.1-1~getdeb1_amd64.deb

  37. Gravatar Icon 37 Shawn

Went to GetDeb and pulled up version 2.0.2 and the associated pidgin-data deb and now it seems to work properly.

  38. Gravatar Icon 38 Dell Bios

Thanks a whole lot for this.

  39. Gravatar Icon 39 tom

What about the SIPE plugin in debian testing? for Microsoft’s Live Communication Server?

  40. Gravatar Icon 40 Nick Presta

    Thanks for the deb.

When installing, I noticed that there were a couple dependency issues:

    libavahi-compat-howl0 libsilc-1.0-2

Of course, apt-get -f install solved the problem but I thought I should give a heads up.

I see in the comments here that people have been misinterpreting what this package actually is. This is not a collection of “all Pidgin plugins,” as the blog post misleads people into thinking. This is a package for the Purple Plugin Pack available at http://plugins.guifications.org/ and maintained by myself and a few other developers.

This package is also out of date, as we have released the Purple Plugin Pack’s version 2.0.0, which includes a number of crash fixes as well as new plugins. We strongly encourage anyone using our plugins with Pidgin or Finch to update to our 2.0.0 release.

  42. Gravatar Icon 42 kalpik

John, im honored to have you visiting my blog! Thanks for the heads up on the new Purple Plugin Pack! Ill cook up a deb for it as soon as i get some time to spare. Life’s hectic these days :)

  43. Gravatar Icon 43 Corpse

    great ! thanks :)
